昨今のハウス・シーンにおけるダブ・ハウス系のムーブメントと共に再評価されたレーベルBalihuのオーナーでありディスコ・ダブ・サウンドのオリジネーターであるDaniel Wang。80年代後期のニューヨーク在住時に耳にしたファンキーなハウス・ミュージックに衝撃を受け、自らのレーベルBalihuを設立。レアなディスコ・サンプルが盛り込まれている不朽の作品「Like some dream (I can’t stop dreaming)」を筆頭に数々の名曲を発表した。ソーホーの楽器店で働くようになってからはムーグやテルミン、ヤマハのシンセサイザーなどを駆使し、100％オリジナルのトラックを制作。90年代後期にはMetro AreaのMorgan Geistが主宰するレーベルEnvironから作品をリリースしたほか、Ghostly、Playhouseなど数々のレーベルからも作品を発表している。ダンス・ミュージックの中心地がニューヨークからヨーロッパへと移りゆく中、2003年に拠点をベルリンに移動。ハウス/イタロ/クラシックなどを織り交ぜるユニークなDJスタイルで世界中のフロアーを賑わせ、ここ日本でも野外フェスTAICOCLUBなどのビッグ・パーティから、アンダーグラウンドなクラブまで場所を選ぶことなく、ダンス・フロアを笑顔で埋め尽くしている。2009年にはBalihuの軌跡を包括したベスト・アルバム『THE BEST OF BALIHU 1993-2008』をリリース。シーンの動向に左右されない恍惚の世界観が凝縮された七色のディスコ・アルバムとして好事家を狂喜させた。そして2015年、1年以上にも及ぶ制作期間を経て、世界最高峰のディスコ・レーベルであるサルソウルのオフィシャル・ミックスCDをリリース。フィリー・ディスコからミュンヘン・サウンド、エレクトロまで、サルソウルが誇る膨大なカタログと物語を1枚にまとめあげた至高の内容となっている。彼のスタイルは、決して奇抜なものや派手なものではなく、むしろどこか懐かしくノスタルジックな感覚を持ち、しかしながら懐古趣味のガラージ回帰とも違うソウル・ミュージックのような温かみと愛情が溢れている。20年近いキャリアの中、多いとは言えないリリース数にも関わらず、絶えず現場から支持を受け続けているのは、常に音楽に対して真摯に向き合う彼のアティチュードがカタルシスを与えてくれるからだろう。

Daniel Wang, owner of the Balihu label and originator of the disco dub sound, established his own label Balihu after hearing funky house music while living in New York in the late 80s. In 2009, Balihu released “THE BEST OF BALIHU 1993-2008,” a best album that encompasses his career. It was a seven-colored disco album that delighted lovers of the music with its ecstatic worldview that was unaffected by the trends of the scene. In 2015, after more than a year in the making, he released an official mix CD for Salsoul, the world’s premier disco label. From Philly disco to Munich sounds to electro, Salsoul’s vast catalog and storytelling is compiled on one supreme CD. His style is not eccentric or flashy, but rather nostalgic, with a warmth and love of soul music that differs from the nostalgia of a return to garage. The reason why he continues to receive support from the field, despite a not inconsiderable number of releases in a career spanning nearly two decades, is that his sincere attitude toward music always provides a cathartic experience.
